Bhubaneswar, Dec 21: Artworks of iconic printmaker and sculptor Krishna Reddy, who pioneered the art of intaglio colour printmaking, are on display at an art exhibition being held at Lalit Kala Akademi’s regional centre in the city.
Krishna Reddy was instrumental in changing the way colour prints would be made in the field of art. As a form of tribute to the master, the Lalit Kala Akademi’s regional centre in collaboration with Printmaking Studio, Sir JJ School of Art and Clark House Initiative Mumbai is organising a retrospective show of the great artist’s works. The exhibition that began December 18 will end Wednesday.
“Krishna Reddy was instrumental in developing a new printing process called simultaneous colour printmaking to produce multi-coloured prints from a single intaglio plate by understanding the viscosity of inks. This art form opened up a new direction in the art of print making,” explained Ramahari Jena, secretary of Lalit Kala Akademi regional centre.
Art connoisseurs can view several of his etchings, paintings, sketches and artworks that were created over a span of more than five decades.
Born in Nandanoor village in Andhra Pradesh, Krishna Reddy began drawing from a young age. “At the age of 15, he was painting posters for the Quit India Movement against the British. He later studied at Shantiniketan where he did his Fine Arts. He then travelled to Europe, where he found his voice,” Jena said.
The artist, who was awarded the Padma Shri for his contribution to art, has since been guest professor at many top-ranking varsities across the world.
Now over 90, he lives in New York and owns two studios – one each in Paris and New York.
