Cuttack: Manglabag police Sunday arrested a broker who had been allegedly diverting poor patients visiting SCB Medical College and Hospital to private hospitals and nursing homes for a kickback.
The accused has been identified as Sushant Kumar Jena (34), a native of Bidanasi area in the city. The police seized visiting cards of some diagnostic centres and nursing homes, a cell phone, Rs 1,000 in cash and some documents from his possession.
Sources said Jena used to lure poor patients with false claims of providing them better treatments at cheaper rates at private hospitals and nursing homes. In the last three months, Jena diverted more than 20 patients from SCBMCH to private clinics.
Jena used to work as a medical representative. In 2013, he was arrested for allegedly stealing a laptop of a doctor. After being released on bail, he started working as a broker for some nursing homes in Ranihat area. He used to send patients from the casualty department of the SCBMCH to the private nursing homes.
