Keonjhar: Despite legal provisions and restrictions, a case of ragging has come to light at the Government Degree Engineering College in Keonjhar Thursday.
Some girl students of Plus-III were not allowed to eat Wednesday night in the hostel while one of the hungry students was admitted to the district headquarters hospital after falling sick due to acidity, a report said.
The principal and staff of the college met the student at the hospital Thursday.
About 200 girl students have been staying in the hostel, but they have been facing a lot of problems due to frequent power cuts. Water is not available to them when power goes off.
Some third year students of Plus-III had taken up the issue with the hostel-in-charge Wednesday night. Before that, the 4th year students had apprised the hostel-in-charge of the problem.
The senior students were angry with the juniors as the former did not like the latter intimating the issue to the authorities again.
This led to heated arguments between the two groups. The junior students alleged that the seniors abused them and did not allow them to eat.
A junior student, Tapaswini Sahu, developed acidity as a result of remaining hungry at night. She was admitted to the DHH where her family members visited her.
A complaint of ragging was lodged with the hostel superintendent Thursday.
The college authorities have taken the issue seriously and ordered for a probe by an anti-ragging squad.
Principal Trilochan Sahu said a committee has been formed to probe the matter. Action will be taken only after the report is available, he added.
