Malkangiri/Nabarangpur/Koraput: Incessant rain threw life out of gear in undivided Koraput mainly in Nabarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri districts in the last three days.
In Malkangiri, communication was disrupted after water level increased in river Saptadhara and flowed on the bridge near Korukonda and MV-37.
Similarly, fire personnel were engaged to restore communication at Mankadjhola near Bondaghat as a big uprooted tree fell on the road. This had disrupted the link between Malkangiri district headquarter and Jeypore, Balimela and Chitrakonda. Several vehicles were stranded due to the sudden disruption.
Meanwhile, water level was rising in Poteru, Saberi and Sileru rivers and all the tehsildars and BDOs were asked to remain alert to face any eventuality.
Most rivers including Indravati, Angi, Turi and Chikili in Nabarangpur district were in spate following heavy rains. While water was flowing at a height of three ft on Anchalagumma-Patraput bridge, four ft high water on Dasaharapada- district headquarters hospital road in Nabarangpur town added to the woes of patients and other commuters.
Rainwater also entered into many homes near Akhandalamani temple and Santra Sahi leaving the residents stranded. With communication hit on NH-26, heavy vehicles were allowed to ply on Mangalam Timber Road. However, this had left the other commuters including bikers stuck at one end as with so many heavy vehicles plying on the road made it almost impossible for them to enter the stretch.
They are facing the problem due to poor drainage system and lackadaisical attitude of government officials, alleged many citizens.
On the other hand, train services were hit due to landslide at Kakirigumma on Koraput-Rayagada railway Tuesday evening resulting in cancellation of all trains on this route.
While Koraput-Rourkela Express was stranded at Kakirigumma station, Hirakhand Express couldn’t move beyond Damanjodi and Samaleswari Express was stuck at Laxmipur. A rescue team of Railways department cleared the station late in the night following which normalcy was restored.
