Cuttack, Dec 1: Hosts Orissa were comfortably placed against Tripura at stumps on day one of their three-day under-16 East Zone Vijay Merchant Trophy league match at the Bidanasi Ground here Tuesday.
Riding on a brilliant spell of pace bowling from Rajesh Mohanty (6/54), hosts Orissa dismissed Tripura for 186 in their first innings. Then Akash Chandra Nayak (53 batting, 113b, 10×4) played the role of a sheet anchor to perfection to guide Orissa to 91 for two at close of play.
Except for RN Chakma (75, 130b, 12×4, 2×6), none of the other Tripura batsmen could tackle Rajesh who bowled with a lot of zest. The pacer was well-supported by spinner Md Sahil Raza (2/45) and the two worked well in tandem to restrict the visitors for whom some of the players were clueless.
Brief scores: Tripura 186 all out (RN Chakma 75, Rajesh Mohanty 6/54); Orissa 91 for two (Akash Chandra Nayak 53 batting). Match to continue.
Biswajit hits ton
Opener Biswajit Bhuyan (142 n o, 411b, 20×4) batted with tremendous application to thwart the Mumbai bowlers and salvage a draw for Orissa in their four-day under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy league game which concluded Tuesday in Mumbai.
After conceding a first innings lead of 327 runs to the hosts, Orissa needed to bat out of their skin to ensure a draw and at least a point from the game. They managed to do both, thanks to the effort of Biswajit, who rarely put a foot wrong during his entire innings.
Biswajit was associated in two notable stands. He put on 157 runs for the opening wicket with Raghunath Malla (52, 255b, 8×4) and then had an unfinished stand of 123 runs for the third wicket with Sandeep Patnaik (60 n o, 125b, 11×4, 1×6) to guide Orissa to 283 for two when umpires called off play with no outright result possible.

FAO football
Radha Gobinda Club and Independent Club were involved in a goalless draw in a match of the FAO first division football league at the Barabati Stadium here Tuesday. It was a listless encounter with players of both sides engaged in aimless football all through the match.
The other game of the day fell through as ECoR did not turn up and accordingly Bidanasi Club were awarded a walkover.
