New Delhi: The team of Ramayana Monday released the first song, “Jai Jai Ram”, from the two-part epic, starring Ranbir Kapoor as Ram and Sai Pallavi in the role of Sita.
Sung by Shreya Ghosal and Arijit Singh, the track is composed by A R Rahman and written by Kumar Vishwas.
Composer A R Rahman said their intention with the song was to preserve the purity and intimacy of a prayer while allowing the composition to grow into a cinematic song.
A soulful invocation, “Jai Jai Ram” combines the spiritual character of an aarti with a cinematic sound. It starts with the wedding scene of Ram and Sita and also features glimpses of the couple travelling in Ayodhya in a chariot as the residents shower flower petals, the makers said in a release.
Rahman said the track is the “simple and powerful repetition of Shri Ram.”
“Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal bring their own distinct emotional expression to Dr Kumar Vishwas’s words, while always remaining true to the devotion at the centre of the song. I hope audiences find both a sense of peace and a personal connection in it,” Rahman added.
“Ramayana” is directed by Nitesh Tiwari and also features Yash as Ravan, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, and Arun Govil in the role of Dashrath, among others. It is produced by Namit Malhotra under Prime Focus Studios alongside co-producer Yash’s Monster Mind Creations.
Malhotra said the song comes from “the deeply personal and timeless relationship that people share with Lord Ram.
“Shri Ram is at the heart of ‘Ramayana’ and, for generations, has been the guide we turn to through every phase of life. ‘Jai Jai Ram’ comes from that deeply personal and timeless relationship we share with Shri Ram,” he said in a statement.
“While Ramayana is being created on a great scale, its true foundation lies in its emotion, its values and its devotion. With ‘Jai Jai Ram’, we wanted our first song to reflect that soul , to celebrate Shri Ram not only as someone we worship, but as the protector, guide and source of strength we carry within us,” he added.
Vishwas said the language of the song has been kept “simple and direct”.
“‘Jai Jai Ram’ are three simple words, yet within them lies a complete prayer. While writing the song, my endeavour was not to describe Shri Ram, because his meaning cannot be contained in words, but to express the relationship every devotee shares with him: as our guide, our strength and our refuge,” he said.
The first part of the film is set to release on Diwali.
