Sambalpur, March 27: A 17-year-old girl, who was set on fire after being allegedly raped by a youth about a month ago, from Badakachhar village under Jamankira police limits here died Friday while undergoing treatment at the district headquarters hospital. The deceased was identified as Kastu Mallick’s daughter Surabhi.
On being informed, Town police station personnel informed their counterparts at Jamankira police station.
A team of personnel, led by IIC P Toppo, from Jamankira police station arrived at the district headquarters hospital and seized the body to send it for post-mortem.
Later, the victim’s mother Sairindri lodged a complaint with police alleging that her daughter was set on fire after she was raped.
When contacted, Jamankira IIC said the allegations of the victim’s mother are under probe. The accused involved in the case would be arrested soon, he added.
According to the complaint, police said the incident occurred March 2 when the victim, a class X student, was alone in her house. Finding her alone, Bishikeshan Teli of the village entered her house and raped her.
As the girl threatened him to tell her mother about the incident, Teli set the girl on fire after pouring kerosene on her and fled the spot.
The girl’s mother admitted her daughter to the district headquarters hospital where the victim died after battling for life for about three weeks, police said.
Quoting the victim’s mother, police said the girl, fearing social stigma, told her mother that she sustained burn injuries while cooking in the kitchen. Before her death, the girl told her mother that Teli set her on fire after raping her, police added. The incident has angered the locals as the accused is still absconding.
