Ray of hope for man seeking euthanasia

Gandaturum: Acting on the direction of textiles minister Snehangini Chhuria, a representative team of the BJD visited Gunanidhi Kheti, a person with a terminal illness who had earlier pleaded for euthanasia.

The team led by Subash Chandra Hota met Gunanidhi, a resident of Mahulapali village under Bheden block in Bargarh district, and assured him of assistance from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for his treatment.

Bheden tehsildar Ajay Kumar Tiwari said he visited Gunanidhi and has taken up the matter with the collector to provide necessary medical assistance to the patient.

Reports said two years ago, Gunanidhi, son of late Rahas Kheti, complained of pain in his waist and knee joints. Subsequently, he could not walk. He received treatment at Burla-based VIMSAR and a private hospital at Visakhapatnam, but his condition kept on deteriorating. He has since been bed-ridden.

Unable to live with the affliction any longer, Gunanidhi, who lives with his mother, wife and a minor daughter, wrote letters July 13 to the Prime Minister, the Chief Minister, the collector, the tehsildar and block development officer seeking permission for euthanasia.  PNN
