Bhubaneswar, Feb 13: Uproar over Opposition demand for the recruitment of local people as Class III and IV employees rocked the Assembly Friday before it was adjourned till Monday.
The issue was raised during Zero Hour by Cpngress chief whip Taraprasad Bahinipati who claimed there was regional disparity in the Kalahandi-Bolangir-Koraput (KBK) region and the districts in the western part of the state because of the appointment of candidates from other districts.
“The practices of appointing candidates of other districts to Class III and IV posts have led to severe resentment among unemployed youths of these districts,” he said.
Local youth should be encouraged to take up these jobs, Bahinipati said and demanded that these posts be given only to candidates of the same district.
Members rushed to the well demanding a ruling from Speaker Niranjan Pujari. As pandemonium prevailed, Pujari adjourned the House at 12.10 pm. When the House reassembled it was adjourned for another 20 minutes. Unable to bring the House to order, the Speaker adjourned the House again till 3 pm.
The adjournment motion on PMGSY roads could not be taken up for debate because of the uproar, while several bills and a number of resolutions scheduled to be brought by private members also could not be taken up during Zero Hour.
When members reassembled at 3 pm, an equal noisy scene prevailed as Congress legislators continued to create an uproar over the issue and advanced towards the Speaker’s podium demanding a decision by the state government over the issue.
Pujari then adjourned the House till Monday.
The issues that were discussed despite the din included the jaundice outbreak and safe drinking water. Other issues that were taken up for discussion during Zero Hour relate to mining and healthcare.
