Nuapada, June 3: The Ultras are low on confidence as security forces have destroyed their camps in the forests one after another and very soon the district will be free of Red menace, Director General of Police (DGP) Sanjeev Marik said Wednesday.
Marik visited this Maoist-affected district to review security and pledged to intensify measures to make the district free of the Maoists.
Addressing a press conference at the district police headquarters, Marik said Left Wing Extremists (LWE) have made forests of the district their safe haven by terrorising the locals. “The topographical features have been assisting the Ultras to strengthen their movement in remote and inaccessible areas of the district, bordering Chhattisgarh,” he added.
The DGP, however, pointed out that dominance of Maoists in remote and backward areas of the district would not last long as specials efforts have been made by security forces to contain the growth of LWE’s movement in the region. “We have zeroed in on Sunabeda area, a remote area of the district. Gradually, several programmes would be undertaken to prevent people from joining Maoists,” he said. Marik further said steps would be taken to raise the standard of living of people as well as their all-round development. Efforts will also be made to strengthen drinking water facilities, healthcare services as well transport and communication system in the backward region to check the Maoists, he added.
Security forces deployed in the district have fought valiantly against Maoists over the years, Marik said.
Responding to a question over deterioration of law and order in the district, Marik said he would pay attention on the issue.
Marik landed in Sunabeda at 10 am from Bhubaneswar by helicopter. After arriving here, he visited a tribal slum and enquired about the problems of the residents.
Later, he interacted with locals during a public meeting at Sunadei. He also held discussions with senior officials to review security situation at two camps in Sunabeda before heading towards the district headquarters to attend a district level review meeting.
