Cuttack: Mohammed Abdur Rehman, arrested for suspected links with al-Qaeda, was in touch with a few information technologies (IT) experts from Bangalore to promote terrorist activities.
Two special teams of commissionerate police (CP) sent to Delhi and Jharkhand have collected detailed information about Rehman’s Bangalore links.
CP sources said Rehman had visited Bangalore many times to build ties with IT experts. “He was collecting video clippings of training programmes organised by terror outfits and books on Jehad from the IT experts. He also sought the help of IT experts to transfer money through internet,’’ said a CP official.
According to sources, Rehman was in contact with a few Oriya IT professionals in Bangalore to get technical support to spread the al-Qaeda network. “We have information regarding Rehman’s association with a few IT professionals in Bangalore. We plan to send a special team to Karnataka to find out details on Rehman’s activities,” police commissioner RP Sharma said.
Rehman’s association with a few Bangalore-based IT professionals has strengthened the apprehension that he was using devices like smart phone and tablet to radicalise students of his madrassa, a senior police official said.
CP sources also claimed Rehman was persuading poor families in Jharkhand to enrol their wards in his Tangi-based madrassa. “We have inputs that Rehman had delivered hate speeches during religious programmes organised in Jharkhand. Even a station diary was made against Rehman by Ranchi police,” the official added.
