Cuttack, Nov 25: In an important interim verdict by the Orissa High Court, Tuesday, the sports department has been asked to temporarily manage the badminton affairs in the state. The court gave the decision in wake of a squabble between two factions, both of whom claimed they had the rights to administer and supervise the sport.
“According to the verdict, the sports department will select the teams for various state and national level competitions,” stated Binod Das, the secretary of one faction, Wednesday. “ I think the verdict is good for the game,” he added.
“The state team has already been announced for the National Junior Badminton Championships and the entry fees have also been submitted. For the greater cause of players’ benefit, the responsibility will now be handed over to the sports department,” stated secretary of another faction, Pradip Mohanty.
Coaches’ conference
Two coaches from Orissa are attending the worldwide coaches’ conference at Antalya, Turkey, November 24-28. They are Subhransu Charan Sarangi from Bhubaneswar and Manoj Kumar Nayak from Cuttack. Altogether 660 coaches from worldwide are attending this five-day long event which will focus on the technical, physical and mental aspects of training for budding sportspersons.
Two selected
Two players from Orissa have been selected for the VIth Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships at Bhankov, Canada, December 30-6. They are Pradip Kumar Patra (senior, 66 kg) and Ashok Prasad (senior, 120 kg). Both players departed from the city, Wednesday.
