Barang, June 12: Residents of Daruthenga on the outskirts of the city intensified their protest against the disposal of waste at Bhuasuni Mouza and the setting up of a power plant.
The residents, who blocked the site Sunday, resorted to the protest after the meeting between them and the administration at the Circuit House Friday failed to yield any result. The villagers Saturday turned back several truckloads of garbage of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) in protest against the alleged indifference of the administration towards their woes.
The residents guarded the dumping yard area throughout the day Sunday to prevent any garbage truck of BMC coming to dispose of waste in the area. Chandaka police deployed several platoons of personnel at the dumping yard site to ensure prevent the situation from spinning out of control.
The residents are facing considerable inconvenience because of the dumping yard that has allegedly been set up in the residential area and have been demanding the shifting of the yard out of the area, sources said. The civic body had earlier made several promises during the setting up of the dumping yard but had reneged on it, the locals alleged. Disappointed over the indifference of the administration over their plight, the residents had launched protests on several occasions to highlight their woes.
Later, officials held talks with the villagers and it was decided to shift the dumping yard to Tulasipur Mouza. However, the civic body is yet to take any step in this regard, the locals alleged. During Friday’s meeting with the administration, the villagers demanded immediate shifting of the dumping yard.
However, the meeting did not yield any result, said sarpanch Prasant Routray.
