Cuttack, June 4: The Orissa high court Thursday directed the state government to form a committee under the chairmanship of state chief secretary GC Pati to review the law and order situation in the state. The high court directive came in the wake of a robbery at the residence of former Orissa high court judge, Justice Pradyumna Kumar Mohanty, at CDA, sector-11, here.
While hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) regarding the robbery, a two-judge bench pronounced the preliminary order and said the committee should include the state DGP, police commissioner, DCPs and SPs of all the districts. Besides, the court asked the government to ensure tight security in urban areas. “Police should conduct checks at entry points of cities from 10pm to 7am.”
The court also asked the government to transfer the police official in-charge of Markatnagar police station here for dereliction of duty.
Earlier, June 1, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik summoned DGP Sanjeev Marik and police commissioner RP Sharma to the Secretariat to know as to what steps the police took in connection with the robbery at Justice Mohanty’s residence.
An armed gang robbed the house here in the wee hours of May 30. Mohanty is currently heading the Judicial Commission of Enquiry probing the Pipili gang rape and murder of 2012. The dacoits tied Mohanty, his wife and daughter-in-law in a room. They broke open cupboards and decamped with cash and jewellery claimed to be worth more than `50lakh. The dacoits escaped with Mohanty’s car, which was later traced near Rasulgarh in Bhubaneswar.
