Mumbai, April 7: Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma said Thursday that his team would be looking to get off to a winning start this season and pick up an early momentum, something they could not achieve in the last two editions of the IPL.
“Over the last couple of years Mumbai did not have a good start. We lost the first two games in both the seasons. So we realise the importance of starting the tournament well,” Rohit told reporters here ahead of his team’s encounter against debutants Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) at the Wankhede Stadium here April 9.
In the 2014 edition of IPL, MI had lost their first five games while in 2015 they lost five of their first six games before recovering to win the title.
Rohit asserted that as the skipper of the side he would want to gain early momentum this year. “T20 is a lot about momentum. To start off on a good note is very important. We have stressed on it. Every time you just can’t recover the way we did in 2015,” stated Rohit.
“Obviously it’s important to get some wins on board at the start and carry that momentum towards next game so that we are well placed,” the Mumbai skipper asserted.
We want to start on a high note. Rohit who was MI’s second highest run-getter with up 482 runs last season also stated that he would come at the top of the order.
“I think that would give a lot of balance to the side, me opening,” Rohit told reporters. “We have talked about it. I will make an assessment after the first 4-5 games, but at this moment I will open.”
