Cuttack, June 7: Sambit Panda of Khurda and Aditi Mohanty of Cuttack emerged champions in the open and the girls’ categories respectively in the State U-11 Chess Championship, which concluded here Sunday.
In the open category, top seed Sambit outwitted third seed Dikshant Dash in a tight seventh round match to clinch the title with 6.5 points. Second seed Mahitosh Dey secured the second position with six points. Soyamsree Mohanty bagged the same number of points, but had to be satisfied with the third place finish on the basis o better tie-breaker points. Mahitosh prevailed over Mohit Kamal Rath, while Soyamshree overcame a stiff challenge by Rishav Anand.
In the girls’ category, fourth seed Aditi got the better of sixth seed P Sairupa to win the title with 6.5 points in her kitty. Second seed Anoushkaa Mohanty (6) stunned top seed Ankita Sahoo to secure the second position. Ankita had to be satisfied with the third place finish with 5.5 points.
