Bhubaneswar, Oct 6: In deference to a High Court order, the state government has initiated steps to shift 124 MBBS students of Sardar Rajas Medical College at Jaring in Kalahandi district to other medical institutions.
The HC asked the Medical Council of India (MCI) and state government October 1 to shift the students to other recognised medical institutes within 14 days.
“We have initiated the process to shift the 124 students to other recognised medical colleges in the state. Very soon, we will also write to MCI about the High Court direction,” health and family welfare minister Atatnu Sabyasachi Nayak told media persons here Monday.
He said if required, the state government would also move the Supreme Court, in the best career interests of the students.
Tamil Nadu-based Selvam Educational and Charitable Trust set up the college in public-private partnership (PPP) mode and admitted 100 students in 2013-14 and 24 others in 2014-15.
Notably, the HC had directed the MCI to consider raising MBBS seat strength in government medical colleges at Burla and Berhampur in its September 14 order. Challenging this order, the MCI had moved the SC September 21.
The apex court recently stayed the HC order and suggested that HC can make further hearing on shifting the students. With this order, the government can shift its 124 students to other private medical colleges, after seeking nod from MCI, sources said.
