Bhubaneswar, Oct 27: St Xavier’s High School hosted the 24th Bhubaneswar Children’s Science Congress Thursday. More than 350 youngsters from 18 schools in the city presented models based on the theme ‘Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development’ at the event.
Of the 58 projects displayed at the congress, 15 projects were selected for the state level children’s science congress. The state-level event is to be held at MBS School Bhubaneswar November 19 and 20 and will feature projects from 250 schools around the state.
The science congress is being organised by National Council for Science and Technology Communication under the Department of Science and Technology.
The projects displayed Thursday included those focusing on effective waste disposal, production of bio-fertilisers and generation of oxygen. Ransingh Nirmalendu Ray, the president of children’s science congress, and Ranjita Mahal, the principal of St Xavier’s High School, were the chief guests at the inaugural ceremony.
In his inaugural address Ray said the science congress was being organised every year to promote the practical adoption of principles of learning and for the creation of awareness about scientific principles and their use in sustainable development.
“The aim of this programme is to develop scientific temper among youngsters and to encourage them to find innovative ways for sustainable development,” he said.
Ranjita, in turn, noted that the science congress gave students the opportunity to present projects based on extensive research.”
She added that such a programme played a major role in igniting the minds of young learners who can be scientists of the future and can play a major role in the development of the country.
Satyabrata Swain, the organising secretary of the children’s science congress said 26 projects will be shortlisted from the state-level congress for the national science congress to be held at Institute of Information Technology under Vidya Pratishthan at Baramati in Maharashtra from December 27 to 31.
