Cuttack, Sept 15: With the death of one more dengue patient at SCB Medical College and Hospital here Tuesday, the toll at the biggest hospital in the state has reached two this year.
SCB sources said the latest victim was a resident of Balasore and had been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of medicine ward Monday. The patient had been diagnosed with dengue while he was in New Delhi recently. The first dengue death was recorded at the hospital in August.
SCB sources, meanwhile, said 44 persons, including 34 men and 10 women, diagnosed with dengue have been admitted to the hospital till Tuesday evening. “Most of the patients tested dengue positive had contracted the ailment during their stay in places outside the state. There is no report regarding dengue outbreak in any parts of the state,” a doctor at the hospital said.
Medicine department professor CBK Mohanty said, “The dengue death rate in the state was below the national average last year. This year also there is no major dengue outbreak so far. SCB is ready to handle any eventuality so far as the vector-borne disease is concerned.”
However, SCB emergency officer Bhubananand Maharana, however, expressed concern over the influx of so many persons affected with the disease from other states. “Now, dengue may spread its tentacle in the state due to the influx of so many affected persons,” he said.
