Berhampur: Cameras fitted with sensors will be installed at all major intersections in this city to keep tabs on traffic rule violators and all major roads will be cleared of street vendors, said Chakraborty Singh Rathore, Commissioner, Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC).

He was addressing a seminar on ‘People’s Participation for a Better Berhampur’ organised by the Ganjam Chamber of Commerce Tuesday.

The seminar was held at the office of the Chamber at Kamlabala Street in the city. Participants spoke about the city’s problems.

Rathore spoke about the schemes being implemented for development of the Silk City. He said plans are afoot to solve the city’s traffic problems. Street vendors and push cart traders will be removed from all major roads and intersections and will be rehabilitated by opening vending zones at various places.

Strong action will be taken against motorists violating traffic rules, he said.

Sensor fitted cameras will be installed at all major intersections in the city. The cameras will take photographs of people violating traffic rules. Their vehicle registration numbers will be checked and letters demanding fines will be sent to their houses, he said.

About 100 CCTV cameras will be installed at various other places to keep tabs on crimes taking place on roads. All traffic lights in the city will be repaired and made functional, the BeMC commissioner said. All works are expected to be completed by May.

Tenders have been invited and the traffic problem in the city will be resolved with the help of the police, he said.

All stray cattle in the city will be tagged with specific identification numbers by collecting details of their owners. Penalty will be imposed on the owners if their cows are found creating traffic problems, Rathore said.

A private agency will be given the contract worth Rs 5 lakh to collect details about the cattle and their owners, and the process will be completed by February-end, he added.

Steps will also be taken for beautifying the city. Walls facing roads will be painted with pictures. Four fountains will be installed to enhance the beauty of the city. Roads, drains and sanitation projects will be upgraded, Rathore said.

Gopalpur MLA Pradip Kumar Panigrahi and BDA Chairman Subhash Moharana spoke on plans to develop the city.

Chamber President VV Ram Narasingha Rao presided over the seminar. Secretary Santosh Sahu, environmentalist Sudhir Rout, educationist ET Rao, Siba Prasad Subudhi, Santosh Kumar, Manoj Padhi, Jamula Suresh and other Chamber members attended the seminar.
