Siblings carry mother’s body in sling

Sorada: In a heart-wrenching incident, two siblings of Sorishibili village in this block of Ganjam district were forced to carry their mother’s body in a sling due to unavailability of a hearse Wednesday.

The brothers were seen carrying the body wrapped in a bed sheet. The incident triggered tension in the area for a while as irate locals placed the body on the road and staged a demonstration. They claimed that the administration of sitting idle even after repeat of such incidents.

According to sources, Sitaram Nayak and Radhashyam Nayak admitted their mother Bhanumati Nayak (80) to Sorada government hospital after she was affected by fever Monday.

Two days after treatment, Bhanumati breathed her last Wednesday morning. After her death, the brothers approached a doctor and requested him to arrange a hearse.

The doctor reportedly asked them to wait for the vehicle. However, due to delay in the arrival of the vehicle, the brothers carried the body in a sling.

Even as the state government has launched the Mahaprayan scheme, genuine beneficiaries are not provided hearse service, locals said.

Tehsildar Manorama Jali and sub-inspector Ahalya Maharana along with a police team reached the spot and brought the situation under control. After the intervention of the officials, the body was taken to the village in a vehicle.

The sarpanch provided a compensation of Rs 2,000 under Harishchandra Yojana to the bereaved family.  PNN
