Cuttack, june 9 : Former Chief Minister Nandini Satpathy was born in Cuttack and began her public life from here, but the city still does not have a statue of the former leader, rued writer Manorama Mohapatra at the birth anniversary celebrations of the only woman chief minister of Orissa at Red Cross Bhawan here Tuesday.
“Satpathy was the only woman chief minister of Orissa. She launched a crusade against injustice and exploitation. She is a source of inspiration for all Oriya women. Soon, a signature campaign will be launched to demand the establishment of a statue of the late leader in the Silver City,” Mohapatra said.
Mohapatra also urged the participants to wholeheartedly support the signature campaign and try their best to bring an end to the menace of female foeticide in the state.
Participating in the programme, former minister Sitakanta Mahapatra praised Satpathy for her dynamic leadership qualities. “Nandini Devi was instrumental in bringing about several reform measures in administration during her tenure. She had created a niche for herself in the field of Oriya literature,” the former minister said.
Several intellectuals, literary personalities and representatives of various women’s organisations were present at the birth anniversary celebrations.
