Six suffer serious burns in Rourkela restaurant fire

Rourkela: At least six people were injured as fire broke out at a restaurant in Gandhi square near Panposh here Sunday morning.

The injured were all staff of the restaurant and have been identified as Pradeep Mahakud (42), Padman Behera (42), Kamalnath Giri (40), Lutu Dutt (42), Alekh Mohapatara (45) and Telsa Toppo (45). They have all been admitted to the Rourkela government hospital.

The accident occurred at the restaurant ‘Pancham’ when a gas cylinder caught fire. The flames engulfed the entire hotel, reducing its furniture, cooler, fans and some utensils to ashes.

On being informed, two fire engines rushed to the spot and took 10 to 15 minutes to douse the flame.

“The situation could have been more dangerous had there been some customers at the restaurant,” a local resident said.
