Cuttack: Sniffer and trackers dogs displayed their skills at the inaugural day of police professional championship at the Reserve Police Ground at Buxibazar here Wednesday.
Angel, a sniffer dog of the Cuttack city police, traced banned drugs hidden in two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Angel, a Golden Retriever variety dog, has been participating in the championship for the last three years. Blue, a tracker dog of Orissa police, also could locate narcotics kept in two bags, sources said.
Similarly, sniffer dog Lisa received huge applause by tracing tiffin bombs buried under the ground. Sources said the dog has expertise in tracing explosives. Jara, a German shepherd variety sniffer dog of Berhampur police, also demonstrated its explosive detection skills. Jara had traced explosives kept in a bag from Purusottam Express during last year’s Nabakalebara festival.
Amar, a tracking dog of Puri police, demonstrated its skills to track suspicious people. Sources said Amar, a Labrador variety dog, was instrumental in the arrest of miscreants involved in a bank robbery case at Narangada in Khurda.
According to sources, the state government has created six inspectors posts for better management of sniffer and tracker dogs. “These inspectors will be in charge of the dog squad. We have urged the state government to name the dog squad as K-9,” said an official.
Meanwhile, special DG BK Sharma said 15 sniffer dogs will be inducted into the squad and they will be trained abroad.
