Cuttack: Soumya Ranjan Mishra of Khurda and Sarthak Debata of Rourkela emerged champions in their respective categories at the Cuttack District Open Chess Championships which concluded at the ECoR Institute here Monday.
Soumya clinched the title in the senior category with 6.5 points from eight rounds. Local player Anshuman Samal and Nayagarh’s Ashirwad Swain secured the second and third place respectively with 6.5 points each in their kitty. Brothers Rajesh Nayak (six points) and Rakesh Kumar Nayak (5.5) were fourth and seventh in the final standings. The fifth and sixth positions went to Ravindra Kumar Ojha and Manish Kumar (both six points).
Soumya got a prize money of Rs 4,000 while Anshuman and Ashirwad got Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000 along with their trophies.
In the junior category, Sarthak bagged 7.5 points while Swapnil Priyadarshi of Khurda and local girl Ankita Sahoo finished second and third with seven points each in their kitty. Sarthak, Swapnil and Ankita got cash prizes of Rs 2,000, Rs 1,500 and Rs 1,000 respectively along with trophies.
Other winners: Shiyam Satyansh (U-6); Adyan Rath (U-7); Bikash Kumar Lenka (U-8); Stitapragyan Sahoo (U-9); Siddharth Dehuri (U-10); Pratyush Mohapatra (U-11); KK Bisol (best veteran); Ananya Anamika (best woman); Md Zainul Abedin (physically handicap); SK Ezaz Ahmed (best railway).
Celebrity XI triumph
Celebrity XI clinched the CEO Cricket League title after comprehensively beating Spartans XI by nine wickets in the final in Bhubaneswar, Monday.
Opting to bat, Spartans scored 57 for six in the allotted 10 overs. In reply, Celebrity XI completed the chase in only four overs.
