Cuttack, June 4: Why is it that a robbery at the residence of a former High Court judge woke up the police department from its slumber even as such incidents are happening daily in the city? This is the question which bothers the residents of Silver City.
In the wake of the robbery at the residence Justice PK Mohanty at Sector-11 in CDA here, the entire administration and police seem to have come to their senses. “Robbery and theft are common in the city. It is only when it happens to a high profile person that the police decide to act,” said Amarendra Pathak, a Station Bazaar resident.
Police do little to tackle incidents of robbery, theft and even gang-war, he said. “It is good that the top officials have admitted the laxity in policing. However, I am confused whether the robbery at the judge’s house was unfortunate or a blessing in disguise,” he added.
Naresh Patnaik, a resident of College Square, said though the police have promised several steps to address such incidents, their efficacy is questionable. “There has been no credible leads into the robbery at judge’s residence. Imagine the plight of those who are not so privileged and high-profile. In such cases, even FIRs are not registered,” he rued.
“As is the case with the rest of the country, the police act only when a high-profile person becomes a victim. Did the police assure that steps would be taken to probe all cases of robbery and bring the guilty to book at the earliest? Even as four teams have been formed to arrest the robbers, scores across the city have nobody to listen to,” said Dharanidhar Patra, a city resident.
