Bhubaneswar: After a brief spell of rain over the state for the past one week, the stage is set for a severe cold wave condition that may grip the state in the next few hours.
With the mercury dipping and fog engulfing most parts of north India, a unit of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) here has announced a cold wave spell in the interior parts of the state in the next 24 hours.
The Met Centre here Friday foresaw clear skies over the interior pockets bringing down night temperature while the skies might remain cloudy over isolated pockets of coastal Orissa which may also bring in a few spells of rain.
The Met has issued warning of moderate fog over the interior pockets that may reduce the surface visibility of up to 200 metres. Officials have also warned fishermen of strong and gusty surface wind with speed reaching up to 45 kmph along Orissa coast Saturday.
“Currently, there are no active systems over the Bay, but westerly stiff wind continued to blow into the state. This phenomenon, however, will not hamper the weather condition and a cold wave condition will begin to sweep the state from the next 24 hours until the end of this month,” said weather experts here.
Meanwhile, the minimum temperature has fallen by one to two degrees at most places in the state, according to data registered in the past 24 hours. The Met has recorded a minimum of 10.5° Celsius at Sundargarh and 10 other places have recorded a minimum temperature of below 10°.
The skies over the Capital city and its neighbourhood may continue to remain cloudy and may experience occasional rain or thundershower in the next 24 hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures may hover between 27° and 16° C over the city Saturday.
