Bhubaneswar, June 22: The state government is set to implement a scheme for training youth of the BPL category and SC/ST women to drive light motor vehicles (LMVs) to enhance their employability.
Training in driving LMVs will be provided to the targeted beneficiaries, including women, by licenced government and private driving training institutions, according to a statement issued by the state commerce and transport department.
Each institute will impart training to 25 people in one batch and will engage at least two trainers for this purpose.
BPL category members of the 18-35 years age group and SC/ST women who are at least 5 feet tall and have cleared the Class VIII examinations will be eligible for training.
District level committees headed by collectors and with RTOs and DEOs as its members will be formed to select the candidates, the state government said.
The trainees will be taught about the components of LMVs, their mechanisms and functions, driving theory and traffic rules and regulations. They will be trained on jeeps and cars.
The 45-day training will be of the non-residential type and the state government will pay `4,850 per candidate to the training institutes, inclusive of cost of driving training and acquiring of driving licences.
The training institutes will face third party evaluation of implementation of the scheme to ensure quality and transparency, said the department. A website will be created to upload details about trainees and training institutions.
The transport department will implement the scheme, while the principal, Government Driving Training School, Bhubaneswar, will be the state nodal officer for the scheme.
