Fashion designer Gipsita Nayak’s label Gipsitaz, launched at New York Fashion Week, has earned applause from critics and fashionistas alike
Born and brought up in Orissa, Gipsita Nayak, a fashion designer, has been in the US for the last seven years working as a fashion show producer and stylist. Recently the designer launched her label Gipsitaz in Plitzs New York Fashion Week. The highlight of the show was the rich and beautiful handloom textiles from Orissa, put together in a luxury ready-to-wear western collection. All the designs are one of a kind and can be customised according to the client. Gipsita tells Orissa POST that her new venture showcases her love for the handloom of the state.
“The theme of my collection is ready-to-wear western apparel. I always loved the rich and detailed handloom textile of Orissa. So when I decided to design the collection, Orissa textile was my first choice. My brand Gipsitaz has tried to promote the art, culture and handloom of Orissa and I thought this was the right opportunity to launch it on a global platform,” she says.
Talking about her label, Gipsitaz adds, “It was formed with the idea of creativity with a cause. It was inspired by the fact that everything was unique and I focused on the uniqueness of the textiles and the distinctive art of the state. The endeavour of introducing the beautiful textiles of the small scale handloom industry to the world has been my focus.”
Gipsita’s creations were much appreciated in America and the designer feels elated when people approach her after the show to know more about her creations.
“Many guests came to me after the show to congratulate me. They found the collection fresh and wearable. They were in love with my choice of fabric and the colour combination. One of my models told me that while she was on the runway she could hear the audience appreciating the designs,” the designer says.
