Bhubaneswar: The unrestricted movement of stray cattle and bulls in busy areas and on roads across the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) limits has emerged as a major concern.
Herds of cattle roaming on main roads, in market areas and even residential neighbourhoods are disrupting traffic and causing accidents. Faced with the growing problem, the BMC has initiated steps to seek the assistance of a private agency to find a permanent solution, a senior official said.
However, discussions are underway on whether the agency will only be responsible for rescuing cattle from roads or will also manage their accommodation, food, medical treatment and overall maintenance at cattle shelters. Sources also emphasised the need to balance animal welfare with public safety. Any initiative to address the stray cattle problem must ensure humane treatment and proper protection of the animals.
