Ganjam: Some stray dogs were found feeding on the body parts of a newborn baby near City Hospital in Berhampur Monday afternoon.
The local residents staged a demonstration in front of the hospital, accusing the authority of callousness.
The police reached the spot and immediately sent the body for post-mortem.
While the police team was not sure if the baby was alive or killed by the dogs, the hospital authorities pleaded ignorance about the incident.
Local people observed that someone might have abandoned the baby girl, who could have fallen prey to stray dogs.
A case has been registered against unknown persons under section 318 of IPC (abandoning a newborn) and investigations are on, police said.
According to reports, the local people first spotted some stray dogs feeding on the corpse of a newborn baby. Later, they chased away the animals and informed the police.
