Sambalpur, Jan13: Intensifying the stir for unitary university status, the
students of Gangadhar Meher Autonomous college staged a demonstration here in front of the Collectorate Tuesday.
Reports said, the students boycotted classes in the morning and took out a rally which culminated before the Collectorate.
The agitating students shouted slogans in support of their demand and
presented a memorandum to the
Chief Minister through collector
Balwant Singh.
“Our long-standing demand for unitary university status to the college has fallen on deaf ears of the government. On the other hand, Ramadevi Women’s College of Bhubaneswar was given women’s varsity status, while Khallikote Autonomous College of Berhampur was accorded with the status of a cluster university in the new year,” students’ union president Milan Hota said.
The promise made by several ministers and MPs, during various college programmes, to provide unitary university status to the institution has become a farce, the other student leaders said. As the newly elected representatives of western Orissa are hesitant to raise the issue with the state government, they should resign from their posts, they added. Over 250 students, including students’ union general secretary Debananda Nayak, students’ representatives Purnachandra Saha,Madhusmita Behera, Snigdha Shri Hota, former union president Sidhant Mohanty,
vice-president Ekamra Sahoo, took part in the demonstration.
