Deogarh: Tension ran high at Deogarh Government College as irate students locked it up and staged a sit-in, protesting against cancellation of the student union elections and demanding the decision be revoked.
The angry students accused the college authorities of deliberately cancelling the elections even though there was violence by the students.
The decision to cancel the elections was taken by the college staff council after two attendance registers were found missing from the Botany Department.
The college staff council secretary and English lecturer of the college, Sarat Chandra, had Tuesday confirmed the decision of the council through a press note.
An emergency meeting, convened in the wake of the register sheets going missing, decided to cancel the elections for this year. The meeting was presided over by the principal, Santoshini Satapathy.
While candidates started filing their nomination papers for the upcoming students’ union elections in colleges and universities across the state, the students of Deogarh College continued their protest.
Angry students demanded a thorough probe into the incident and action against those found guilty. Some angry students were seen staging a demonstration in front of the college principal’s office, demanding immediate withdrawal of the decision.
The students warned of continuing the protest until the college authorities revised their decision.
As per a notification issued by the Higher Education Department September 28, student union polls in various universities will be held between 8 am and 2 pm October 11. The results will be declared on the same day.
