Students want M Phil student’s ‘suicide’ probed

Sambalpur: The alleged suicide of a girl student of Gangadhar Meher Univeristy here took a curious turn after students demanded a high level probe into the death while paying candlelight homage to the deceased Sunday evening.

The deceased identified as Rakhi Nayak, a native of Gobindtola in the town, was doing M Phil. She allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the second Mahanadi river bridge November 9. The students cried foul over her death as they gathered outside the university main gate and paid candlelight homage to the departed soul. They claimed that she had been murdered and some vested interest groups are trying to project the incident as a suicide.

The agitating students demanded that the district administration and police show promptitude and order a high level probe to ascertain the reason behind her death. The university students including the NSS members, students of various departments and hostel inmates participated in a condolence meeting. NSS head Pradosh Acharya conducted the programme assisted by Nilima Priyadarshini, Manas Khanda, Chhanda Charan Dalpat, Pratik Seth and Sandip Kumar Mishra of the university.
