Studying at home a preference for most students

BHUBANESWAR: A reformed pastor Richard Baxter had once said, “Study hard, for the well is deep, and our brains are shallow.” With matriculation and other exams fast approaching, students have their work cut out to study and excel. However, a clichéd yet vital question which troubles most youngsters is: Where to study?

Quite a few students are puzzled as to which is the best place to study: library or home?  Studying at each of these places has its own pros and cons. While library can be a great venue to enhance focus, having someone at your beck and call at home during study hours can reduce stress. Choosing a place where one can study and learn most effectively is vital in the long run for a student.

During study hours, one should optimise the conditions under which they can focus more on study and be more effective and efficient. Orissa Post interacted with students of the city who are in preparation mode to delve deeper into the subject.

Nandita Sharma, a student of Std XII, said, “As our syllabus for the examination was completed earlier, schools have been suspended to give us a preparatory vacation. In such times, the choice of place for studying is vital. I personally feel library is a better place for studying than home. This is due to the presence of an academic environment.”

“Moreover, if we come across something which is not comprehendible, we can seek support from our teachers at any time in a library. On the other hand, if I study at home, I am easily distracted by my family members. The typical noise in a household doesn’t suit my style of learning. I feel home is a place for relaxation. Hence, my academic productivity comes down at my place,” she added.

Rahul Singh, a student of Std X, said, “It is just a matter of preference. For instance, when I visit a library, I am usually inclined to read random books. Hence, I feel home is the best place for me to study as I have all the tools that I might need during a grueling session of preparation like books, internet, laptop and food among others.”

Another student Suravi Rani said, “I prefer to study at home as I usually put my headphones on during studies. I possess the habit of reading aloud as it helps in faster memorisation. I also practice the weird habit of reading infront of a mirror as it helps me immensely. My supportive mother brings me a cup of tea every once in a while which stimulates me. Unfortunately, such perks are unavailable at a library. Also, getting ready and travelling to a library is a sheer wastage of time if you ask me. However, some of my friends do prefer a library as a homely environment makes them too comfortable and lazy.”

Opinions of city students have made it quite clear that more than anything; it is a matter of preference. However, we cannot deny the fact that most students prefer studying at home due to availability of a comfortable environment. Either way, choosing your preferred place of studying seems to be vital in this examination period. In the words of Abraham Lincon, “Be sure you put your feet in the right place, then stand firm.”
