Bhubaneswar: In a battle of old warhorses Subrat Das prevailed over Siddharth Sen 6-4 in the best of 11-frame final to emerge champion in the MIET State Snooker Championships which concluded at the Vintage Club, here Tuesday. This incidentally was Subrat’s third MIET title; he had earlier won in 2006 and 2007. Winning this title after a decade proved once more that Subrat still has the capability of competing with the younger crop of players.
The scoreline of 74-24, 79-50, 42-51, 45-58, 77-26, 47-46, 44-75, 76-29, 42-58, 81-34 in favour of Subrat proves that it was a contest that went down to the wire. Probably the turning point of the match came in the sixth frame. Subrat for most part of that frame was down, but turned it around with some defensive ‘snookers’ moves which helped him to win it and build up a lead of 4-2. Had Siddharth won the frame the scores would have been tied at three-all and it could have been anybody’s affair.
Siddharth, earlier after losing the first two frames had made a strong comeback to win the next two. However, the sixth frame win, gave Subrat a handy lead and he maintained it for the rest of the match.
Subrat got Rs 25,000 along with the winner’s trophy while Siddharth received Rs 13,000 and a trophy. The semifinalists and quarterfinalists got Rs 6,000 and Rs 4,000 each. Akash Mohapatra was presented Rs 5,000 for achieving the highest break (73) of the tournament.
