Suicide bid by girl in Sevashram school

Sad young woman.

Kotgarh: There is no let up in mismanagement plaguing tribal residential schools in the state as a Class-X girl of a Sevashram school near here in Kandhamal district tried to commit suicide by hanging Wednesday.

The girl hanged herself from the ceiling fan in her room and tried to end her life.  School authorities rescued the girl and rushed her to the Kotgarh health centre first and later shifted her to a Baliguda hospital. The girl was subsequently shifted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur after her condition deteriorated.

While the incidents of minor girls studying in Sevashram schools getting impregnated following physical harassment are being reported at frequent intervals in the state, the latest incident has spread shockwaves.

However, the actual reason for which the girl tried to end her life is yet to be ascertained. School authorities however suspect that she might have taken the extreme step following a brawl with fellow students. The school authorities reported the matter to block welfare officer Mohan Chouhan.

The officer reached the school in the evening and held a closed door meeting with the school teachers and headmaster regarding the incident. Police reached the school and started an investigation after the headmaster lodged a complaint in the Kotgarh police station.
