Bhubaneswar, March 3: One more person succumbed to swine flu Tuesday, raising the toll due to the H1N1 virus to five in the state this season.
The latest victim was a 56-year-old woman, a resident of Bhubaneswar, who had come from Berhampur. Her swab samples tested positive for the virus February 26. Since then she was under treatment at an isolation ward of a private clinic here.
With this death, the Regional Medical Research Centre here has examined 100-odd swab samples till Tuesday out of which 14 have been found H1N1 positives.
“The condition of the woman deteriorated Tuesday. She was under observation at a private clinic here for a week. Earlier, she had some cardiac problem. She had also travelled to north India recently from where she might have got infected with the virus,” said Kailash Das, state public health director here.
The latest death has triggered bewilderment among the people as despite the tall claims of preparedness by the state swine flu has been taking its toll.
The officials are citing that they have drafted enough manpower, drugs and set up isolation wards at the three medical colleges and two district hospitals, but the situation now is telling a different story.
According to state Health and family welfare minister Atanu S Nayak, the state was fully prepared to face any situation and had enough stock of medicine for swine flu.
All precautionary measures have been taken by the Government and the hospitals are fully prepared to handle swine flu cases properly, a senior official said.
