Cuttack: Worried over frequent instances of WannaCry ransomware attacks, the state Home department Sunday issued an advisory to the superintendents of police (SPs) of all the districts and deputy commissioners of police (DCPs) to ensure safety measures at police institutions.
Following the direction of the Home department, the state police headquarters has also issued a similar advisory to the SPs and DCPs and directed the officials to take measures for security of computers at various police stations and other offices of the police department.
Since most of the work at the police stations and SP offices is accomplished online, the officials were told to update the anti-virus software of the computers with the help of technical experts.
While the ransomeware virus had earlier affected the computer systems of Berhampur City Hospital and Purusottampur health centre in Ganjam, the trail of attacks continued in other districts too. The ramsomeware hit two healthcare institutions in Kalahandi and Sambalpur district Saturday.
While the sickle cell institute on the premises of Vir Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla came under attack of the virus Saturday, the officials detected the malware affecting the computer of drug distribution cell at the community health centre at Kesinga in Kalahandi. Besides, the computer systems of Balia Digital Photo Studio at Saranakula were also affected by the virus. Although no incident of virus attack was reported from police department so far, the home department has warned the SPs in this regard.
Since various police stations under the twin city Commissionerate Police have gone online, experts have installed updated anti-virus software in terminals of different police stations in Cuttack.
“After the ransomware WannaCry virus attack, we have installed anti-virus in our computer systems Sunday,” said Malgodown inspector-in-charge (IIC) Debi Prasanna Patra.
When asked, DCP Sanjeev Arora said, “The Home department has issued an advisory in this regard. We have adopted safety measures at the police stations and other offices. I have directed the IICs of all the police stations to take precaution.”
