Bhubaneswar, March 27: Imparting classes on music and guitar to children in leisure time and taking a sneak peek at opportunities to perform at various venues across the country are now an indispensable part of the lives of six passionate music lovers of this city. The super six, who often toil hard to squeeze time out from their academics to pursue their passion, are the driving force behind the rock band, Sky Traffik, in the city.
The rock band, specializing in the NU electro progressive metal genre, first sung in August 2014 after months of deliberations on the blueprint of their maiden band. “Few of us decided to follow our passion and do something beyond academics. All the members of the band are students of some of the premier institutions across the state, studying a range of subjects like medicine, engineering, management etc. There are a couple of students doing their plus two as well. It is only music, which brought all of us from different streams together for a common cause,” says Jyoti Prakash, a bassist from the rock band. Jyoti is a 3rd year student of the Trident Academy of Technology.
The band comprises a guitarist, two vocalists, one drummer and a key board player besides the bassist. The band, most of whose members are from Orissa also have some people from other states too. Reetom Deori, the guitarist hails from Assam and is studying at KIIT. Similarly, the drummer, Anirban Bhowmick, hails from Kolkata.
The rock band from the city, now emboldened by the response it has been garnering through its shows, often organises tours across the state as also the country. “We often target colleges as we find most of our takers from there. Recently we did a show in Guwahati at a rock marathon called ‘Rockanton’, where around 400 bands from across the country participated. We are proud that our band from Orissa was able to reach the top eight. Otherwise, we often visit different colleges to perform,” says Jyoti.
Though these budding musicians find squeezing time out a bit troublesome yet it’s their passion, they say, that transforms their pain into pleasure. Reetom Deori, the guitarist of the band says, “Pursuing our passion is an entirely different experience. It greatly cuts down the stress levels and inculcates into us a feeling of self satisfaction. We are always keen to give something new to the society. There are many rock bands around, in the country. But we are trying to prove our worth by including some innovative ways to create something original.” Reetom is pursuing his MBBS at the Sum Hospital, in the city.
When asked about the prevalent scenario of rock bands in the city, Reetom said, “Bands in the city are in its nascent stage. But slowly they are on the rise. Right now we have around five-six bands in the city. But I hope with time the numbers will surely increase.” The band meanwhile is now also planning to launch their maiden music album by the end of the year.
