Rayagada: A local court Monday awarded life imprisonment to a computer teacher of a private school here on charge of sodomising a minor boy. Additional District & Sessions Judge (ADJ) Debadatta Das Mohapatra handed down the lifer and imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh on the convict, M Uday Kumar, who had been arrested October 9, 2017 for the heinous act on a Class III student. He would undergo an additional jail-term if he defaults the fine.
According to the case diary, Kumar sexually abused the boy. The matter came to light when the child fell ill and his parents took him to Visakhapatnam for treatment. The parents were shocked when the doctors declared that their child has been sexually abused.
On being questioned about it, the child narrated the whole story. Following it his parents lodged a complaint at the Rayagada Town Police Station. A case of aggravated sexual exploitation under Sections 4 and 6 of the Protection of Child from Sexual Offence (POCSO) Act was registered against Kumar and he was forwarded to court. The judge pronounced the verdict after examining the statements of 21 witnesses in the case.
Other than life imprisonment, the court has also sentenced one year rigorous imprisonment to Kumar under Section 75 of the amended Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act.
