Sorada: A girl sustained critical burn injuries after an unidentified miscreant hurled acid at her while she was sleeping at her home in Gangpur village under Badagad police limits in Ganjam district late Saturday night.
The victim Rinki (name changed) screamed for help following which family members rescued her in a critical condition and rushed her to the Badagad government hospital. However, no complaint was filed yet at the police station.
This is the second-such incident in the village after a gap of several
years.
At the hospital, doctors administered the girl primary treatment and shifted her to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
The victim has sustained burn injuries on her chest and two hands and is undergoing treatment in Berhampur.
The incident occurred when the family members were asleep after dinner.
“The girl is unable to speak properly as her condition is critical. The doctors also advised us not to make her speak. Our immediate task is to ensure her recovery,” said Additional SP (Ganjam), Gupta Mahakuda.
The girl sustained around 60 per cent burns and is under observation, said a doctor attending on her.
Police said the exact cause of the attack was not known.
At least three persons came on a motorcycle to the house of the girl around midnight and allegedly threw acid on her when she opened the door and fled, police said.
Quoting her parents, police said the victim had received threat calls from unknown persons some days back, but they did not inform the police about it.
“We have detained one person and hope to identify all the accused soon,” said police. PNN
