Angul: Tension prevailed at Bantala-based Sri Chandrasekhar Junior College following the suicide of a Plus II second year student over alleged mental torture by the college authorities.
The incident came to the fore after government railway police recovered the body from a railway track near Kurudul Nuapada under this police limits Saturday. It was identified as Jitendra Sethy (17) of Bedasasan village. Irate students vandalised college properties including the principal’s vehicle.
Police were deployed to maintain peace and order in the college, sources said. According to sources, some students chewed pan and gutkha and spitted on college walls. To avoid spitting, the college authorities reportedly had placed 30 flower vases along the walls.
However, Sethy along with his friends allegedly broke 27 of the vases.
On learning the incident, student union president Satyajit Behera insulted them before all students. Meanwhile, Principal Ajay Kumar Sahu called their parents for a discussion.
Since then, Sethy was under mental pressure, sources said.
The students alleged college authorities involved their parents for petty issues leading to such incidents.
They claimed the principal inflicted mental pressure on students. However, Sahu refuted the allegations saying he did inflicted no mental pressure on anybody. PNN
