Thiruvananthapuram/Bhubaneswar: Former Union Minister and Congress Lok Sabha member Shashi Tharoor Monday expressed deep sorrow over the death of IPS officer Shefeen Ahamed K, who passed away at the age of 50 after a prolonged battle with cancer.

Ahamed was serving as Inspector General of Police, CID-Crime Branch, Odisha, and died at a private hospital in Hyderabad while undergoing treatment, local media reports said.

Odisha Police mourns death of IGP Shefeen Ahamed

Recalling his association with the officer, Tharoor, Congress Lok Sabha member from Thiruvananthapuram, said he first came to know Ahamed during his deputation to Kerala, when he served as Rural Superintendent of Police in Thiruvananthapuram.

“I came to know Shefeen during his deputation to Kerala, when he served as Rural SP of Thiruvananthapuram. He was a thoughtful, unfailingly courteous officer with a fine mind, who wore his competence lightly,” the Congress MP remembered about the police officer in a post on X.

Describing him as a thoughtful and courteous officer, Tharoor said Ahamed possessed a sharp mind and considerable professional ability. He also recalled how the officer handled his responsibilities with humility despite his competence and experience.

Ahamed, a graduate of the College of Engineering, Trivandrum (CET), was a native of Thiruvananthapuram. He joined the Indian Police Service in 2003 and subsequently built a distinguished career in Odisha, where he served in several important policing assignments over more than two decades.

Tharoor said Ahamed made a particular mark in the fields of cybercrime investigation and Crime Branch operations. Even after returning to his home cadre in Odisha, the officer maintained a close connection with Thiruvananthapuram and remained in touch with people he had known there.

“Though he returned to his home cadre in Odisha, he never quite left Thiruvananthapuram behind, and stayed in touch over the years. That he should be taken from us so young, and in the city he loved, makes this loss all the harder to bear,” said Tharoor.

The Congress leader conveyed his condolences to the officer’s family, colleagues in Odisha Police and others who knew and respected him.

The Odisha Police also mourned the death of the senior officer. In a post on X, it described Ahamed as a distinguished member of the 2003 IPS batch who served with dedication, integrity and professionalism.

The police force highlighted his contribution to policing, particularly his work in cybercrime investigation, and said his professional legacy would be remembered with respect.
