Paradip: In a shocking incident, two siblings were electrocuted while connecting a service wire to the supply cable during heavy rainfall at a slum in a port city Tuesday.
The deceased brothers were identified as Prabin Barik and Pintu Barik, sons of Prabhakar Barik of Jashapur village under Pipli police limits in Puri district.
The siblings lived with their parents and sister at a slum near Nua Bazaar Haribolia mutt under Paradip police limits with their father working at a stevedore company in the port city. The siblings were killed with their mother watching from a distance. The brothers were connecting the wire to the cable line when the power supply had gone off in the area. Their mother collapsed on the spot.
The residents disconnected the power supply and rushed the siblings to Biju Memorial hospital where a doctor declared them dead on arrival. The incident plunged the residents into mourning as the deceased’s parents were reportedly in a state of shock after losing both their sons. Police registered a case in this connection and sent the bodies for post-mortem.
Sources said many of the residents in the slum including Prabhakar do not have regular power connection and draw power to their homes by connecting a wire to the supply line.
The incident occurred when power supply had gone off in the area while heavy rain was lashing the port city. Prabin went out first and was trying to fix the service wire to the supply line by standing in a pool of rainwater when he was electrocuted.
Pintu on seeing his brother screaming tried to rescue him and was similarly electrocuted. PNN
