Dhenkanal, April 7: Forest officials will undertake the enumeration of tigers living under Hindol forest range of Dhenkanal district from May 11.
The six-day census will be undertaken in Kandhra reserve forest and adjoining forests bordering Satkosia Sanctuary. The decision was taken after the movement of leopards and a Royal Bengal Tiger was noticed in villages under the forest range, DFO Pradipta Kumar Sahu said.
The divisional forest officer (DFO) will undergo training in Angul from May 4 for the enumeration. Later, forest officials and staff will be trained on similar lines in Hindol, he added.
A leopard from Satkosia Sanctuary had strayed into Kandhra reserve forest a month ago and had killed three cattle. Forest officials had then collected its pugmarks for examination.
Even two years ago, residents of Gobindpur under Sadar forest range of the district had noticed a tiger moving in the area and had informed the officials, following which its pugmarks were collected near a spring.
After examining the pugmarks, tiger experts had declared that they were of a Royal Bengal Tiger. It was then suspected that the big cat might have strayed into the region from other jungles.
