Bhubaneswar: An 18-year-old tigress, Rebati, died due to old age complications at Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) here Wednesday.
NZP deputy director Jayant Kumar Das said tigress Rebati died around 5.30am at the zoo hospital due to old age and digestive disorder.
The tigress was in off display for two months and was under treatment for 20 days in intensive care unit of the zoo hospital. Multivitamins and liver tonics with fluid were administered to her as part of its treatment. However, efforts of the veterinarians went in vain, Das said.
Rebati was born in captivity from Rohit and Shailaza, July 3, 1999, and she had no issues.
The NZP now has 24 big cats, including eight white tigers. There are 12 male and as many females.
Das said the autopsy of tigress was carried out by a team of experts from the OUAT’s College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry.
“As per preliminary post-mortem report pulmonary collapse, haemoperi Cardium associated with debility and old age were most likely reasons behind Rebati’s death,” Das pointed out, adding that the sample of blood and other organs have been collected by experts of veterinary college for further examination.
Meanwhile, the NZP has received two female deer from the Raj Bhawan Deer Park Wednesday.
