Bhubaneswar, Sept 13: Three players from Orissa are sharing the joint third spot with 3.5 points each after the completion of the fifth round of the IVth Keshabananda Das Memorial Fide Open Rating Chess Championship here Sunday. They are FM Soumya Ranjan Mishra, Utkal Ranjan Sahoo and WGM Kiran Manisha Mohanty.
Soumya held CRG Krishna of Andhra Pradesh, while Utkal forced V Srinath Rao of Maharashtra to share points. Kiran Manisha signed peace with DB Chandra Prasad of Andhra Pradesh. Rakesh Kumar Jena also held higher rated IM Srinath Narayanan of Tamil Nadu in a tight match.
However Smaraki Mohanty and Rakesh Kumar Jena salvaged some pride for Orissa by winning their respective matches. Smaraki outwitted G Sahithya of Telangana and Rakesh checkmated Himanshu Moudgil of Delhi.
Neel Kamal triumph
Neel Kamal Football Club edged past Gada Gopinath Prasad Foootball Club 2-1 in a Group D match of the 12th Gati Krushna Memorial Football League at the Unit-I Boys’ HS Ground here Sunday.
Sanchit Samantray opened the account for Nil Kamal in the 21st minute. After six minutes RK Jena doubled the lead. Santosh brought one back for Gada Gopinath in the 37th minute. After that they tried their best but could not find the equaliser till the final hooter.
The Group C match between United Brother’s Club and Golak Bihari Association ended in a goal less draw. Both the teams have to be blamed themselves for the deadlock as they thwarted several opportunities.
Taekwondo Academy
A Taekwondo Academy was inaugurated by Keonjhar District Athletic Association secretary Janardan Dash at Keonjhar, Sunday. The academy is affiliated to Keonjhar District Taekwondo Association. Seven students from this academy will participate in the upcoming Sub-Junior Taekwondo National Championship.
