Daringbadi/Brahmanigaon: The condition of a 17-year-old at Brahmanigaon village under Daringbadi block in Kandhamal district by quacks has gone bad to worse Friday morning.
He was being treated with a brass pot when the pot got stuck onto his stomach, rendering his condition to be critical.
Sources said Debanand Baliarsingh, of Jadangi village of Katamaha panchayat under Mohana block in Gajapati district stayed with his relatives in Brahmanigaon village. As family’s financial condition is poor, he leaving his education mid way through was doing some odd jobs. Few days ago, he fell ill and subsequently his health condition started to deteriorate. His family members were not able to take him to any hospital for his treatment due to lack of money.
Friday morning they were attempting to treat him through a locally-practiced medication, but little did they know that their attempt would make the teen’s condition more critical. Family members used a brass pot to get him cured. Unfortunately, the brass pot got stuck to his stomach.
Finding on other way out, they immediately took him to Brahmanigaon primary health centre. Despite his efforts when Dr Pramod Kumar Sethy failed he advised the family members to take him to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
According to Dr Sethy, “Debanand’s case is a rarest of the rare one in medical history. Locally practiced treatment style has had adverse effect on him.
On the other hand, Debanand’s relatives said that his family was in distress as they can never afford his treatment cost.
Superstition, ignorance and poverty still rule the roost in some remotest pockets of the district. And Debanand’s case is a glaring example of this. The state government is rolling out various schemes but these people are ignorant of them. It’s time the district administration, the health department and the State government took steps to get these people rid of superstitious belief and to make them aware of available free medical facilities, some neighbours urged.
