Truck driver dies in road mishap

Bangiriposi: One person died when the driver of an onion-laden truck lost control of the vehicle and it turned turtle. Trying to jump out of the vehicle, another person got trapped under the truck and breathed his last. Two others also suffered serious injuries, officials said Sunday. The deceased was also a driver, they said, and added that the two used to drive the vehicle in turns. The deceased was identified as Salimuddin, 42, a native of Sutahat village in Haldia area of neighbouring West Bengal. Locals said that the Dwarasuni Ghati road on the highway where the accident occurred has turned into a death trap with reports of frequent deaths and critical injuries of the commuters due to accidents.

Police said the onion-laden truck (Regd No- WB- 25- J-4720) was heading towards Kolkata when due to the failure of the brakes it crashed against the sidewall on the Dwarasuni Ghati road and overturned. Salimuddin was rescued from under the truck by locals and rushed to the community health centre here. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police and firefighters rescued the two injured and took them to the hospital also.

Currently, they are undergoing treatment there. Sources said that they may be shifted to some other hospital Monday. However, surprisingly some locals without showing any compassion for the victims were seen ransacking the truck and running away with onion sacks. Some were even seen trying to rob the injured. The inhuman act has drawn flaks from various quarters.
